Patrick Malahide (above, with Frances Barber) is one of those actors you’ll know from countless supporting roles from the 1970s onwards, but this is his one and only starring role, playing gentleman detective Roderick Alleyn in these adaptations of the novels by Ngaio Marsh. Alleyn is aristocratic, handsome and intuitive, but what really sets him apart is that over the course of the novels, we follow him through his career and developments in his personal life, including marriage and children. He wasn’t just married to his work – unlike the detectives of Marsh’s fellow mistress of crime, Agatha Christie.
