Pick of The DAY

WATERLOO ROAD 8PM, BBC1

★★★

It’s the day of the inquest into Chlo’s death, and Coral is feeling guilty – but Donte is consumed by grief and rage when he finds out about the teacher’s involvement in the accident that killed his wife. This episode is directed by Casualty star Amanda Mealing (she played Connie Beauchamp), who cut her teeth behind the camera on the hospital soap, and has proven she can handle the pace and intertwining storylines – including the mystery surrounding Neil’s ‘late’ wife and the growing romance between

Kim and her deputy head Lindon.

GREAT BRITISH MENU 8PM, BBC2

★★★★

Series 18 kicks off with four chefs from the northeast – stretching here from Yorkshire and the Humber to Northumberland – competing to cook a course in this year’s banquet, which is inspired by Paddington Bear’s 65th birthday and celebrates British animation and illustration. Gareth Bartram is a returning contestant, competing against Will Lockwood,

Cal Byerley and Rory Welch. They begin with the starter (vegan this time) and fish course, and pay tribute to the Clangers, Andy Capp and, of course, Paddington himself. Andi Oliver (above) hosts.

BEN FOGLE: NEW LIVES IN THE WILD 9PM, CH5 ★★★★

George and Sophie left the UK to follow their dream of self-sufficiency. They live off-grid with their children in the heart of the Casentinesi Forest National Park in Tuscany – a two-hour walk from the nearest shop or bar. Electricity is solarpowered, heat comes from wood fires, and water is sourced from a mountain spring. It sounds idyllic, but, as Ben learns, he’ll have to earn his keep if he wants to share the couple’s dream. So he turns his hand to collecting honey from the family’s bees, helping to repair the track up to their house – and trying to stop a wayward

cow from destroying all their crops!
