DESPERATE CALLS SUNDAY,
1.30PM, RADIO 4
How did Matthew come to this? He was a teacher with a young family, lots of friends and an outwardly happy life; but he also had a gambling problem. Matthew made repeated calls to William Hill customer services, as he frantically tried to place bets, and berated staff when he couldn’t get what he wanted. Those calls were recorded and we hear them in this sad story that charts Matthew’s downward spiral into debt.
The programme also uncovers the failures of the gambling industry to protect addicts.
