The second instalment of David Attenborough’s epic nature series, which celebrates the wildlife on our doorsteps, opens with a sweeping shot of the lush green Caledonian Forest in Scotland – an ancient woodland where golden eagles soar. Over this hour-long episode, Attenborough follows Britain’s forests through the seasons, revealing the hidden dramas played out within them by fungi, butterflies (right), flying squirrels and more.

GRACE 8PM, ITV1
John Simm returns to play Detective Superintendent
Roy Grace in three new feature-length episodes of this gruesome Brighton-based detective series, adapted from the bestselling novels by Peter James (see feature, page 7). In tonight’s first instalment, a woman is raped in a hotel on the night of the Assistant Chief Constable’s leaving party. Grace and his colleague DS Branson (Richie Campbell) are forced to investigate all hotel guests, including some high-ranking East Sussex police attendees. But soon, Grace becomes convinced that the crime greatly resembles one he has seen before...
RISE AND FALL 9PM, CH4
★★★ If you loved The Traitors, put this new reality series on your watch list. Greg
James (right) hosts as 16 people, from all walks of life, enter into a power struggle to win up to £100,000. Tonight, the players are divided into two groups before the contest, which airs nightly at 10pm, really gets going.
INTO DEATH VALLEY WITH NICK KNOWLES 9PM, CH5
★★★ The highest temperature on Earth (57°C) was recorded in Death Valley in California, and in this two-part series, Nick Knowles travels through the region from top to toe. In the first episode, he gets his adrenaline pumping while driving a sand buggy, camps under the desert stars, and learns how to forage for food in the barren landscape. Let’s hope he’s dressed for the weather.
