Ben opens a short run of revisits with a return trip to Australia, where he catches up with Barbara, whom we first met in 2015. She had turned her back on her safe but ‘dull’ life in Switzerland for adventure in the outback, and has lived alone in an isolated bush camp for 16 years. Eight years ago, Ben experienced punishing heat and backbreaking work as he helped Barbara to maintain the legacy of her late husband Roy, operating a wild animal retreat that relies on tourists and volunteers to keep going. But the past years have not been kind – low rainfall, a devastating bush fire, a serious cancer scare and, of course, Covid have brought her close to losing everything.
