This first in a new run finds Jay Blades and the experts keen to crack on with new projects, and the first is a painting belonging to a Ukrainian family who risked everything to keep a piece of their history safe. There’s also an unusual piece of Beatles memorabilia, a self-built kayak and a leather swivel chair.

SECRET LIFE OF THE FOREST 8PM, CH5

Meet apprentice forester Holly. One of her first tasks since relocating from an office job to Dalby and Cropton Forests is to handle a chain saw and learn to fell trees that might be a danger to the public. Autumn is fast approaching, and the

forest is a busy place for nocturnal creatures such as moths and badgers (above), as well as for human astronomers – Dalby was recently awarded Dark Sky Reserve status for its clear views of the stars. And don’t miss the update from the beaver pond, where the older cubs might be ready to move on and start a beaver family of their own.

THE BAY 9PM, ITV1

Dean is a man clearly struggling in the role of primary carer for his children, and he definitely has anger management issues – tonight, a new arrival triggers another violent outburst from him. As we reach the midway point of this fourth series, there are still no obvious suspects in the arson attack – and the fireworks are far from over. At home, Jenn and her partner Chris are having trouble with teenager Erin – and Chris’s ex, Jacqui (Claire Goose), isn’t helping.

THE COCKFIELDS 10PM, BBC2

First shown on Gold, this sitcom is low-key but well-observed, and has a fantastic cast. We follow Simon (the show’s cocreator Joe Wilkinson) and his girlfriend Donna (Motherland’s Diane Morgan, right) on a visit to Simon’s family on the Isle of Wight. Wilkinson usually plays weirdos (see Netflix’s

After Life), but here he’s pretty normal in a show that makes subtle and affectionate observations about family life. The cast also includes Sue Johnston, Nigel Havers and the late

Bobby Ball.
