The struggles in Taiwan share similarities with those in Ukraine. Both are countries that have maintained their independence despite the insistence of a Communist power that they reunite with their ‘motherland’ – in Taiwan’s case, China. As the producer of 90 per cent of the world’s most advanced chips – the ones found in digital devices we all rely upon – any conflict could have dire consequences for our technology needs. For this report, Jane Corbin visits Taiwan and meets key players on both sides of the independence debate. As China’s President Xi Jinping starts an unprecedented third term in power, it’s a worrying and unsettling time for the people of this tiny island. Ordinary Taiwanese have seen what has happened in Ukraine and are preparing for the worst, and will defend their homes if they must.
