Pick of The DAY

BEYOND PARADISE

8PM, bbc1 ★★★★ Humphrey has a field day with the mystery in tonight’s episode – it’s one that suits his unconventional thinking perfectly. A dead man is found in the centre of a crop circle, and working out how he got there and who he is proves to be quite the puzzler. Humphrey and the team also have to contend with the local conspiracy theorists, who are quick to believe that it’s the work of aliens – especially when footage emerges of lights in the sky above the field where the man’s body was found. At the cafe, Martha is preoccupied with a visit from a food critic, and it distracts her from an IVF appointment with Humphrey.

GARDENERS’ WORLD 8PM, bbc2

★★★★

Another unmissable episode for our green-fingered friends as tonight, Monty Don is watching early spring growth closely as plants start to come to life.

Sue Kent is also celebrating the season at her garden in Swansea, where she creates a white border and finds an unusual way to grow container vegetables.

BECOMING FRIDA KAHLO 9PM, bbc2 ★★★★

This series has done a superb job of painting a detailed picture of the life of Frida Kahlo (right), going far deeper than those tragic headlines of injury, pain, heartbreak and loss. In particular, her role as a child of revolution has been especially well-explained and contextualised. While her tumultuous marriage to fellow artist Diego Rivera is a key part of her story, he was not the only man to fall under her spell – she had many other lovers and collaborators – and her work speaks for itself.

Her fame now far eclipses that of her husband.

AMAZING RAILWAY ADVENTURES WITH NICK KNOWLES

9PM, CH5 ★★★ Your second dose of Nick Knowles in intrepid traveller mode (after Sunday’s

Into Death Valley) finds the presenter in Vietnam. He’ll be travelling by sleeper train from Lao Cai on the Chinese border to the bustling city of Hanoi, and on to the port town of Haiphong. This is a country of stunning contrasts and Nick is visibly moved by what he sees, and the warm welcome he receives from the Vietnamese people.
