Unlike some of the other stops on Bettany’s cultural tour, Albania is not worldrenowned for its ancient sites. But here, the TV historian puts the mountainous country, which was known as Illyria in classical times, firmly on the map. Bettany takes us on a journey that includes epic fortress towns and key archaeological sites, including the ancient city of Butrint, which boasts an impressive outdoor theatre. She also heads up into the Albanian Alps to meet remote communities, and goes underground to the secret bunker of former communist dictator Enver Hoxha.
