‘Horrible Fitzenhagen insists on changing your cello piece.’ Poor Tchaikovsky, always a little nervous about his compositions, got very upset when he heard that the German cellist Fitzenhagen had mucked around with his Rococo Variations, putting the pieces in a different order. Tonight, the German cellist Nicolas Altstaedt (right), puts things right when he plays Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations in the order that the composer intended, in this concert from Bridgewater Hall, given by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.
