Movie choice

PEARL HARBOR (2001) 12 8PM, 5STAR

This big-budget production was dismissed as crude and basic by critics, but audiences loved it. Technically, it is quite an achievement – especially the bomb’s-eye sequences in the climactic battle scene – but the problem lies in the rather sappy love triangle of Ben Affleck (right), Josh Hartnett and Kate Beckinsale.

ALIEN COVENANT (2017) 15 9PM, E4

Number six in the sci-fi horror franchise divided critics and fans, but those parasitic life forms have evolved to terrifying new levels, with a little evolutionary push. David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the Prometheus mission, has developed a god complex and created a monster (or two).

PRETTY WOMAN (1990) 15

10.40PM, BBC1 Originally intended as a dark drama about prostitutes and drug dealers, this ended up as one of the lightest and most successful romcoms of the 1990s. It’s also the film that turned Julia Roberts into one of Hollywood’s biggest stars.

DJANGO UNCHAINED (2012) 18

11.35PM, 5STAR

Quentin Tarantino’s stylised, take-noprisoners approach to the spaghetti western is violent and exhilarating.

The subject matter is controversial, tackling slavery in America in the years before the Civil War. Jamie Foxx as Django (below) and Christoph Waltz star.
