Paltry policing ploy
BY putting 20,000 extra police on the streets, the Tories are restoring their reputation as the party of law and order.
But isn’t Mr Johnson’s promise to assign every crime victim a named officer to contact about their case an unworkable gimmick? Bobbies will spend more time fielding calls than investigating. If they don’t answer because they’re busy, off-shift or on holiday, that risks fuelling resentment.
And many forces already keep victims up to speed with developments. With crime rising, the PM should make it easier for the police to cut offending, not hobble them with headline-generating stunts.
