Should there be a separate TV channel for sport?

THERE have been complaints about sport on TV being rammed down our throats (Letters). Football, the Olympics and Wimbledon do get wall-to-wall coverage, but a lot of sport does not appear on terrestrial TV, even though it used to when we had just three channels. The BBC used to show all the home Test matches, one-day cricket internationals, semi-finals of county one-day competitions and Sunday league games. There was golf and snooker, horse shows hosted by the great David Vine, and even midweek horse races were shown. Today, there are so many channels that no one has to watch sport if they don’t want to. Matches at the Euros between minor nations should have been shunted from the main channels. It was amusing watching Gary Lineker and his pundits pretending to look interested.

D. P. MOORE, Beckenham, Gtr London. i ENJOY watching sport, but three-anda-half hours of women’s cricket has got to be the turn-off event of the year.

DIANE GUYMER, Crowborough, E. Sussex. SPORT is ubiquitous in the TV schedules, but it is possible to avoid it. Avail yourself of the vast number of non-sport shows on BBC IPLAYER, ITV Hub and All 4.

F. HARVEY, Bristol. it’S a fabulous summer for those who love sport. the joy of the crowds at Wimbledon, the Euros, motor racing, cricket and golf have been uplifting. We’ve been missing this for 18 months, so let the sports lovers have their fun. for everyone else there is the off button, Netflix or Amazon Prime.

SARAH BOXALL, Woking, Surrey. I’VE often wondered why there can’t just be one channel for sport, removing the need to disrupt favourite programmes. The BBC no longer has an excuse as it can use all the extra money raised from charging licence fees to the over-75s.

FIONA NORRIS, Coleraine, Co. Londonderry.
