SENIOR TRIUMPH PUTS DODD IN DREAMLAND

DEREK LAWRENSON

WELSHMAN Stephen Dodd has barely played any competitive golf for 18 months but he now has a passport to the lucrative Champions Tour in America after pulling off an astonishing victory in the Senior Open at Sunningdale yesterday.

The 55-year-old was up against Darren Clarke and Miguel Angel Jimenez down the stretch and defeated them both with a birdie at the 18th. ‘I’ll see you in the States!’ said his playing partner, American Jerry Kelly, at the finish.

Clarke looked poised for victory when he hit the front at the 14th but he had to settle for third place after a bogey at the 16th, Jimenez passing him with a birdie at the 17th, with Bernhard Langer fourth. Dodd’s victory earns him a place at next year’s 150th Open at St Andrews.
