£2k energy cost ‘deals’

ENERGY companies have been accused of trying to push worried consumers towards rip-off tariffs.

Regulator Ofgem has set a price cap which, from October 1, will average £1,2 a year for normal usage by a typical household.

However research by comparison site The Energy Shop found some companies are offering fixed-rate tariffs of around £2,000 a year.

One from Outfox the Market is advertised at £2,125.40 for an average dual-fuel customer. Britol Energy and Together Energy are offering deals for £1,926.6 .

Founder of The Energy Shop, Joe Malinowski, fears the ‘offers’, most of which have been launched in the last week, are designed to dupe anxious customers. He said at the moment people should rely on the standard tariff covered by the cap. He added of the high fixed-rate prices: ‘That screams of exploitation of consumer fears.’
