FOURSOMES

SPIETH and THOMAS lost to RAHM and GARCIA 3&1

SERGIO GARCIA opened the Ryder Cup with a wild shot off the tee, but Jon Ramn’s sensational 60foot putt on the fourth hole gave the Spanish pair the lead and they didn’t fall behind again. Not even a remarkable vertical shot from Jordan Spieth on the 17th could rescue the Americans as Europe registered their first point.

JOHNSON and MORIKAWA beat CASEY and HOVLAND 3&2

THE European duo won two of the first four holes to go one up, but the Americans then won four without reply to take the match away. Europe pulled one back at the 13th, but Collin Morikawa sealed the hosts’ first point by winning the 16th hole.

KOEPKA and BERGER beat WESTWOOD and FITZPATRICK 2&1

BROOKS KOEPKA missed a five-foot putt on the ninth which allowed Europe to draw level at the halfway mark. However, the Americans won the next two holes to take charge of the contest. Lee Westwood had a 10-foot putt to win the 15th and take Europe within one, but he missed it and America went on to take the point and go 2-1 up.

CANTLAY and SCHAUFFELE beat McILROY and POULTER 5&3

EUROPE’S experienced pairing of Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter lost the first five holes and never recovered. They did win back-to-back holes at 10 and 11 but never looked like staging a fightback. When Poulter missed a putt for birdie on the 15th their fate was sealed and the USA took a 3-1 lead from the morning session.

FOURBALLS JOHNSON and SCHAUFFELE beat CASEY and WIESBERGER 2&1

DUSTIN JOHNSON and Xander Schauffele took control of the match by winning the third, fourth and fifth holes with the former holding his nerve to sink the decisive putt on the fifth. Schauffele secured the victory on the tricky 17th hole.

DeCHAMBEAU and SCHEFFLER halved with RAHM and HATTON

AFTER Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton had won the fourth hole to take the lead, Bryson DeChambeau turned the contest on its head with an astonishing 417-yard drive off the tee on the fifth to leave him just 70 yards short of the hole. From there he eagled to bring America level and the European pair never regained the lead. The Americans won the 15th to take them within touching distance of a win. But Hatton held his nerve on the final hole to sink a seven-foot putt and halve the match.

FINAU and ENGLISH beat McILROY and LOWRY 4&3

RORY McILROY’S miserable day got even worse as he and Irishman Shane Lowry only won one hole in their match against Harris English and Tony Finau (below). The contest started in superb fashion with Finau sinking a 30-foot putt on the first before Shane Lowry drained a putt of his own to half the hole. However, the momentum swung in USA’s favour when they won the eighth, ninth and 10th holes back-to-back.

THOMAS and CANTLAY halved with FLEETWOOD and HOVLAND

TOMMY FLEETWOOD and Viktor Hovland were three up after eight holes but blew their advantage — failing to win any of the last 10 and allowing the USA to tie the match.
