Drivers in dark on new zone

LESS than half of motorists potentially affected by the expansion of London’s low emissions zone knew of the changes, a study has found.

Four in ten drivers in and around the capital were aware it came into effect yesterday, while only a third knew how to check if their vehicles were compliant and many more were unsure of the boundaries, according to the poll by Motorway.

The Ultra Low Emission Zone, policed by traffic cameras, means drivers of most diesel cars made before 2015 and pre-200 petrol cars will have to pay £12.50 to enter an area which now extends to the North and South Circular roads.

Those who don’t pay face fines of £80, or £1 0 after 14 days. Motorists can check if their vehicle is affected on Transport for London’s website.
