Generals seize power in Sudan

SUDAN’S government was overthrown in a military coup yesterday.

Thousands of protesters flooded the streets after soldiers arrested the prime minister and seized power. Security forces opened fire, killing three demonstrators and wounding another 80.

The head of the military, General AbdelFattah Burhan, announced the takeover on TV, claiming it was necessary because of quarrels among political factions.

He said the military would remain in charge until elections in July 2023.

Sudan had been on a path to democracy since the ousting two years ago of longtime autocrat Omar al Bashir
