Are you after cooking tips for pasta chips or pesto eggs? Just look at TikTok

By Sean Poulter Consumer Affairs Editor

THEY might not be dishes you would find skimming through the cookbooks of Jamie Oliver, Delia Smith or Nigella.

But thanks to TikTok, pesto eggs, mozzarella doughnuts and pasta chips are proving a hit with young Britons, who are turning to the social media app for cooking tips. The video clips, as part of the social media trend viewed by millions, also include recipes such as whipped lemonade and feta pasta.

The trend has been identified by the Waitrose Food and Drink report, which charts changing tastes and sales. And as part of this, the supermarket is predicting the rise of ‘potato milk’ as an alternative to dairy as well as batch-made bottles of cocktails.

It is also tracking a rise of climatarianism, a diet focused on reducing your carbon footprint that supports eating seasonal local food and cutting out meat.

The report also suggests many are adopting a 5:2 diet, where they only eat meat two days a week. James Bailey, Waitrose’s executive director, said: ‘Three-quarters of all 18 to 24-year-olds we surveyed told us they’ve been looking at TikTok or Instagram for food inspiration over the past year.’

Waitrose said the platforms ‘have driven sales of everything from feta and tortillas to pesto and potatoes due to viral food trends’. Searches for barbecued watermelon recipes on Waitrose.com rose by 65 per cent in August, and up 171 per cent for knickerbocker glory recipes.

Sushi sales are up 54 per cent, while for herbs and spices they rose 41 per cent.
