Team GB won’t even be allowed to hug in Beijing!

By DAVID COVERDALE

TEAM GB athletes will be banned from hugging, partying and sightseeing when they are in Beijing for the Winter Olympics. Organisers yesterday announced the raft of restrictions participants will face in February, with the bubble similar to the one imposed at the summer Games in Tokyo. Olympians must wear masks outside of competition, avoid any physical contact — like handshakes and hugs — and keep a two-metre distance from other athletes. While staying in China they will have daily Covid tests and will not be allowed outside of a ‘closed loop’ of permitted destinations, including Games venues and accommodation. Unvaccinated participants will have to quarantine for 21 days on arrival and anyone who tests positive for Covid during the Olympics will be sent to hospital or an ‘isolation facility’. ‘We want everybody at the Games to be safe, that’s why we’re asking all participants to follow these guidelines,’ said International Olympic Committee director Christophe Dubi. ‘Keeping everyone healthy will ensure the focus remains on the very fundamentals of the Olympic and Paralympic Games — the athletes and the sport.’ Paralympics chief Colleen Wrenn added: ‘With the ongoing pandemic, absolutely no one involved in the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 can afford to be complacent.’
