SCORES of irreplaceable trees at National Trust properties have been torn down by Storm Arwen, leaving staff in tears at the devastation.
The precious specimens, including 250-year-old oaks and beeches as well as a 170ft redwood, are among thousands of trees destroyed by Friday’s storm.
The conservation charity said restoration was likely to cost at least £3million.
The redwood was among more than 50 trees uprooted at the Trust’s Bodnant Garden in North Wales. Acting head gardener Adam Salvin, said: ‘It’s been a real shock to staff and volunteers to see the devastation caused in one night. There have been tears.’
Lake District properties were also hard hit, as well as both Wallington and Cragside in Northumberland, Hardcastle Crags in West Yorkshire, Erddig near Wrexham in Wales and Attingham Park in Shropshire.
