Labour now more trusted with taxes

LABOUR has opened up a ten-point lead over the Tories when it comes to setting the right level of taxation, a poll suggests.

The Ipsos Mori survey found 37 per cent of adults trust Labour most on taxation, compared with 27 per cent for the Conservatives.

However, it found that the Conservatives still lead Labour as the most trusted party to grow Britain’s economy, by 37 per cent versus 31 per cent.

The poll, for the Evening Standard, also showed the Tories retain a marginal lead on handling the pandemic at 33 per cent to 29 per cent. But on a string of other issues Labour is now ahead. These include reducing the cost of living (3 per cent to 21 per cent), ‘levelling up’ the country (44 per cent to 14 per cent) and improving the NHS (45 per cent to 1 per cent).

Gideon Skinner, head of political research at Ipsos Mori, said: ‘Over the past year, we have seen criticism of the Government’s performance on tax and spending steadily grow.

‘Despite it all they do still keep a lead on the economy, although Labour is ahead on other current concerns such as the cost of living, the NHS and levelling up.’
