North braces for Storm Malik with ‘glancing’ 80mph winds

By Liz Hull

PARTS of Britain will be battered by 80mph winds today as a storm heading for Denmark sweeps past the country.

Yellow weather warnings have been issued for Scotland, Northern Ireland and parts of northern England when Storm Malik hits early today. Malik will deal a ‘glancing blow’ to the UK as it tracks east, though Denmark will bear the brunt of its force.

Power cuts, and road, rail, air and ferry disruption are likely, forecasters said. Paul Gunderson from the Met Office said ‘the UK will be dealt a glancing blow as Malik moves eastwards on Saturday’.

He added that ‘the highest winds are expected in exposed coastal areas in the north and east of Scotland’. Weather warnings will be in place from 4am today until 12pm on Monday. The South will see calmer, blustery winds and showers.
