Eek! Now Minnie Mouse goes woke as Stella puts her in a trouser suit

Mail Foreign Service

SHE has worn her famous red polka-dot dress for nearly 100 years.

But Minnie Mouse has now been given a ‘woke’ makeover, ditching the recognisable outfit for a smart blue trouser suit designed by Stella McCartney.

The character will show off the new look at Disneyland Paris in March to celebrate 30 years of the entertainment resort – and to coincide with Women’s History Month.

Miss McCartney said: ‘This new take on her signature polka dots makes Minnie Mouse a symbol of progress for a new generation.’ The character, who was created in 1928, will only wear the look temporarily.

But it was met with a mixed reaction online from Disney fans. Conservative US commentator Candace Owens criticised the makeover as an attempt to make Minnie ‘more masculine’.

Speaking to America’s Fox News channel, she accused those behind it of trying to ‘destroy fabrics of our society’.

Walt Disney Studios has moved recently to boost its on-screen diversity, casting characters from a wider range of backgrounds.

But earlier this week, Game of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage, who has a form of dwarfism called achondroplasia, condemned the studio for its remake of Snow White, in which Latina actress Rachel Zegler plays the starring role.

He accused Disney of double standards by promoting the racial diversity of the cast in the upcoming film, but falling back on ‘dwarf ’ stereotypes.

Disney said: ‘To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community. We look forward to sharing more as the film heads into production.’

It came after Mars’s M&Ms had a makeover last week to be ‘better represented to reflect confidence and empowerment’.
