THE Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey is to be charged with carrying out sex attacks in Britain.

The 62-year-old Hollywood star faces extradition from America for a criminal trial here after prosecutors authorised Scotland Yard to charge him yesterday.

The Crown Prosecution Service spent more than a year considering a file of evidence handed over by Scotland Yard last April after a long-running investigation.

The House of Cards star is accused of carrying out multiple attacks on younger men over eight years when he was in Britain working as artistic director at the Old Vic theatre between 2004 and 2015.

The alleged incidents took place in London between March 2005 and August 2008, and in Gloucestershire in April 2013.

He is said to have twice sexually assaulted a man, who is now in his 40s, in March 2005 in London. A second man, who is now in his 30s, claims he was the victim of a sex attack in August 2008 in London. Spacey also faces

an additional charge of causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent in relation to that victim, who first went to police in november 2017.

A third victim, now in his 30s, says he was sexually assaulted in Gloucestershire in April 2013. Scotland Yard officers travelled to the US in May 2019 to interview the actor under caution about the allegations, but it has taken three years to bring charges.

in total, Spacey is to be charged with four counts of sexual assault and one of causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent.

Yesterday a CPS spokesman said prosecutors had authorised charges against Spacey, but he has not yet been charged by police due to a legal technicality. it is understood that he cannot be charged with the offences until he sets foot in the UK.

The actor, who is said to be in new York, is likely to face extradition proceedings before he can be formally charged in person. it means that it could be many months before a criminal trial may take place here.

The two-time Oscar winner is known for starring roles in films including American Beauty and The Usual Suspects.

But he has since been sacked from the netflix hit series House of Cards and Sir ridley Scott erased him from his completed film All The Money in The World.

rosemary Ainslie, head of the CPS Special Crime Division, said: ‘The CPS has authorised criminal charges against Kevin Spacey, 62, for four counts of sexual assault against three men.

‘The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against Mr Spacey are active and that he has the right to a fair trial.’

no date has been set for any court appearance due to the extradition proceedings which will have to take place before the criminal case is listed at a magistrates’ court. The actor could avoid extradition if he chooses voluntarily to return to the UK.
