Thatcher egg hurler fined £90

A UNIVERSITY worker has been fined £90 after throwing eggs at a statue of Margaret Thatcher.

Jeremy Webster, who is deputy director at the University of Leicester’s Attenborough Arts Centre, was filmed throwing the eggs shortly after the memorial’s installation in the Lincolnshire town of Grantham – where Baroness Thatcher was born – on May 15.

A university spokesman said it ‘does not condone defacement’ and the matter was being addressed in line with its procedures.

Three eggs were thrown at the monument, with one hitting its target.

Lincolnshire police officers arrived at the scene within minutes of the incident. A spokesman said they spoke with Mr Webster, 59, and he was given a fixed penalty notice under Section 5 of the Public Order Act.

Two CCTV cameras have been installed around the memorial to help combat further vandalism.
