My potting shed is so good for my elf

I asked around to

find someone To build a potting shed, Such carpenters were

in demand So everybody said. But late one night there came

a knock. I opened my front door. A wizened little man

stood there Just 4 ft tall, no more. ‘I’ll build your potting shed,

my dear, Exactly what you need, With hooks to hang your

garden tools, A bench to pot your seeds. With lots of glass to let in light And big strong double doors, You’ll be so pleased,

you’ll wonder What you ever did before.’ He quoted such a decent price Looked honest, kind and fair, He said he’d start work

straight away Which I agreed right there. He wanted no deposit, Said he never asked for one, He wanted to make sure that I Was pleased with all he’d done. He worked all day and

evenings, too He never seemed to stop,

I took him cups of builders’ tea And cans of ginger pop. And after just one week

of work The potting shed was done. It stood, doors open, full

of light Resplendent in the sun. I saw the hooks for

garden tools The bench for potting seeds, He’d built a shelf for

gardening books, A bin for dumping weeds, A wooden chair, for wet days

I could sit and watch the rain I was so pleased I thanked him Deeply, time and time again. And while he put his

tools away I noticed something odd — A tiny door, set in the wall He smiled and gave a nod. ‘It’s for the little folk, my dear They think you look so kind They’ll gather here on

rainy nights . . . I didn’t think you’d mind.’ I laughed, but kindly, paid

his bill And watched him walk away, I haven’t seen or heard of him Since then up to this day. But late on rainy nights I hear Faint voices chanting rhymes, And tiny lights flash in the dark The tinkle of wind chimes. My potting shed

seems undisturbed My plants thrive and

grow green Though I’ve a few I didn’t pot And some I’ve never seen Strange flowers grow in

tiny pots Attracting bugs and bees There must be explanations But ‘the little folk?’ Oh please...
