Giggs filmed on police bodycam saying he’d just ‘ hit’ girlfriend

By James Tozer

A BLOODIED Ryan Giggs was seen telling a police officer he had just ‘ hit’ his on-off girlfriend in the lip in dramatic footage of his arrest played to a court yesterday.

The ex- Manchester United player – who had allegedly just headbutted Kate Greville in the face – was filmed on a police bodycam explaining they had ‘got in a little bit of a tangle’ and been ‘rumbling on the floor’.

With spots of blood on his shirt, Giggs said it followed an argument at dinner where the PR executive ‘accused me of a couple of things’.

She returned alone to his house, where her sister Emma was dog-sitting, he added in the clip which was played to jurors at his trial for coercive and controlling behaviour towards Kate Greville and assaulting both sisters.

Giggs, 48, is then seen telling one of at least six police officers called to his £1.7million mansion how Miss Greville had said she was leaving him and that: ‘I’m taking the dog.’

The Welshman – who admits he is drunk – informs the constable, refered to as PC Billington, that the five-month-old cocker spaniel called ‘Mac’ is ‘my puppy’.

He adds that in the ensuing argument he ‘stupidly’ refused to hand over her mobile phone which he had taken off her, after which he says: ‘I hit her in the lip’.

Standing in the hall of his home in Worsley, Greater Manchester – still decorated with skulls from Halloween the day before – Giggs also tells the officer that Miss Greville ‘kicked me in the head’ and ‘bust my lip’.

On the video, taken around 10pm on November 1, 2020, Giggs is told by the officer Kate Greville is speaking to his colleagues in the kitchen. ‘Is she going to tell us the same version of events?’ the officer asks.

Giggs replied: ‘She’s going to say I’ve attacked her.’

Shortly afterwards, the officer

tells Giggs there has been ‘an allegation of assault’ by Kate.

‘We’re going to have to place you under arrest and take you down to the police station,’ he tells the Welshman.

He cautions him and pats him down, telling him it is ‘standard procedure’, and takes his iPhone.

The footage then shows a calmlooking Giggs – who is not handcuffed – being walked to a police

van, told to ‘ jump in there for us mate’, and locked in the back.

He was subsequently rearrested for assaulting Emma, now 26.

Jurors were also read a statement from another officer responding to the 999 call that Giggs had ‘blood around his mouth’.

Meanwhile Kate Greville was sitting on the kitchen floor ‘visibly upset’, he added, with ‘ extensive bruising’ visible to her lips.

Also yesterday the 999 call made a few minutes earlier by Emma Greville was played to the jury. Asked why she is calling, she answers: ‘Assault. He’s headbutted her.’

As shouting and swearing can be heard in the background, she adds: ‘Can you come quickly?’

Quizzed on whether an ambulance is needed, Emma Greville replies: ‘He’s just headbutted her in the face.’ She adds there is ‘ blood everywhere’.

Asked for the alleged attacker’s name, Emma Greville answers: ‘ Ryan Giggs, footballer Ryan Giggs.’

The call handler responds: ‘As in the Ryan Giggs?’ ‘Yes,’ answers Miss Greville.

As they wait for police to arrive, she can be heard asking: ‘Why would you headbutt my sister?’ In the background Giggs shouts: ‘She had my phone.’

Later he can be heard saying ‘Kate, Kate, all I wanted was my phone’.

But Emma Greville is heard shouting at him: ‘You have f****** headbutted my sister.’

Jurors at Manchester Crown Court have been told that Giggs grabbed Kate Greville by the shoulders and headbutted her in the face – hours after she confronted him about his serial cheating.

Miss Greville said moments earlier one of her fingernails caught Giggs in the mouth as they ‘grappled’ for her phone handset, causing bleeding.

She maintains in the lead-up to the alleged assault, she had learned he had had ‘full- on relationships’ with eight women during their ‘toxic’ six years together.

The 38-year-old divorcee has also told the jury she became ‘a slave to his every need and every demand’.

Giggs denies using controlling and coercive behaviour against Miss Greville between August 2017 and November 2020.

He has also pleaded not guilty to assaulting her, causing her actual bodily harm, and of the common assault of her sister Emma who was allegedly also hurt in the tussle over the phone. The trial continues.
