But the embarrassment of that Canute-like ducking was nothing to the problem of a row between Labour’s Left and right over rising pacifism and onesided nuclear disarmament in the party.

PRINCE ANDREW says real love will descend on him ‘like a lightning bolt’ — if it comes at all. The 25-year-old, nicknamed ‘randy Andy’ for his amorous escapades, told two million Woman’s hour listeners on BBC radio 4 yesterday he did not know what he was looking for in a wife. ‘i’ve not had any chance to think about it,’ he said.

JOHNNY BURKE (1908-1964). The U.s. lyricist wrote Pennies From heaven and the Oscar-winning swinging On A star. he worked on at least 43 films, and once had four songs on the U.s ‘hit Parade’ at the same time. his longtime writing partner Jimmy Van heusen said: ‘Johnny was, in fact, a born poet. imagery and easy style, pretty but not cloying, that was his trademark. his imitators can’t be counted.’ PIERRE BONNARD (1867-1947). The French artist was famed for his paintings of women bathing. in 1975, an italian car worker paid £32 for two paintings including a Bonnard at a lost property auction. it took 40 years to find it had been stolen in London in 1970, and was worth £500,000.
