Doggy ‘pawrents’ needed in light of the financial crisis

As THE nation faces its worst financial crisis in decades, Dogs Trust is urgently seeking help for the dogs who will feel the most impact.

In recent months, Dogs Trust has received a record number of enquiries from people needing to hand over their dogs to the charity. In August, it received almost 5,000 enquiries from desperate owners who feel they’ve run out of options. According to a recent poll of owners, 43 per cent of respondents thought they would find it more difficult to give their dog all they needed, compared to before the cost-of-living crisis began. Vet bills are the biggest financial canine concern for the coming year, while almost a fifth of people are most worried about the cost of feeding them. To ensure Dogs Trust can continue to be there for every dog who needs help, the charity is urgently seeking more foster carers who can offer temporary homes to dogs in need, freeing up kennel space for those most at risk. In particular, Dogs Trust is calling for experienced owners with space in their homes and hearts for dogs that are more difficult to find forever homes for, such as those that are big, un-housetrained or have challenging behaviour. All fosterers are supported by a dedicated team of home-from-home coordinators.

More information can be found online on the charity’s rehoming and fostering pages.
