Read these Christmas crackers – yule be beside your elf

By Emma Powell

IT’S been a tough year for politicians, and now they’re finishing 2022 as the butt of Christmas cracker jokes.

Gags about government U-turns and the cost of living crisis dominate a top ten of the funniest cracker jokes.

The list was compiled by TV channel Gold, with 2,000 members of the public voting on the top ten. This year’s No 1 was: ‘What type of peas ruin Christmas dinner? MPs.’

Claire Travers Smith, the author of the winning joke, won £1,500. Comedy critic Bruce Dessau said the jokes ‘proved once again that we’re a nation with an unrelenting sense of humour’.

Other gags in the top ten included: Why does Kate Bush need to turn the heating off? She’s running up that bill.

What’s the difference between Liz Truss and a shepherd? One U-turns and the other turns ewes.

How did King Charles sign his Christmas cards? The Artist Formerly Known As Prince.

What do people heating their homes and wrapping paper have in common? Both of them are getting ripped off.
