Grit and bear it!

First snowfall arrives and it’s going to get c-c-colder

By Richard Marsden

AFTER a weekend that brought the first snowfalls to some parts of the country, many of us will have already donned our winter coats.

The bad news is, it’s likely to get colder still, with heavy frosts and more snow.

An easterly airflow – which made temperatures feel close to freezing yesterday – will swing round to northerly.

This could bring snow showers to north-east England from Wednesday, with temperatures falling as low as -6C (21F) later in the week.

In the Scottish Highlands, a warning has been issued for four inches (10cm) of snow in higher areas.

Elsewhere, clearer skies will mean harsh frosts and -6C hitting in the Pennines on Thursday night, while in rural Wales and southern England, -4C (25F) or -5C (23F) is possible, the coldest night of the season for those areas.

By day, even London and south-east England could see daytime temperatures fall to just 2-3C (36-37F) on Wednesday and Thursday, and barely rise above 0C (32F) on Friday.

The Met Office’s Alex Burkill warned the cold snap ‘could last a week’ – but is not likely to bring major snowfall for England and Wales.
