WHEN a spate of murders affect the seemingly idyllic Canadian town of Three Pines, Chief Inspector Armand Gamache is called in to investigate. It’s not an easy mystery to crack, though, as he discovers layers of secrets lying beneath the placid surface of the seemingly sleepy Quebecois town, while his own long-buried ghosts return to haunt him. Alfred Molina (pictured) is perfectly cast as the native French speaker Gamache, a thoughtful and intellectual detective — and a man who tries to see the best in everyone even when seemingly confronted by the very worst — in an engrossing and stylish drama based on the award-winning mystery novels of Louise Penny. If this eight-episode series is a success, Molina could be gainfully employed as Gamache for some time to come — this week sees the release of the 18th novel in the series, called A World of Curiosities. Episodes one and two are available now, with more to follow weekly on Fridays.
