No smartphones for under 11s, says Samsung boss

THE UK boss of Samsung Mobile has joined the row over when children should have a mobile – saying he did not let his daughter have one until she was 11.

James Kitto said it was up to parents but he delayed until she left primary school. Children’s commissioner Dame Rachel de Souza has suggested parents should resist buying youngsters a smartphone because of the dangers of social media.

She referenced the case of Molly Russell, a 14-year-old who killed herself after being bombarded with self-harm and suicide content. In response Mr Kitto told BBC Radio 4’s Today show: ‘What is important here is that, whoever is using a smartphone, of whatever age, is safe when they are surfing and browsing the internet.’
