A lesson in tolerance

WHAT has it come to when the Government needs to legislate to ensure diverse opinions are heard in the groves of academe?

Our universities are meant to be bastions of tolerance where challenging ideas can be discussed and tested. But in recent years an oppressive conformity has taken hold.

Speakers who question the woke groupthink, for instance on trans ideology, have found themselves banned from campus by self-appointed moral guardians.

So this paper welcomes Mr Sunak’s legislation to prevent this gradual stifling of free speech. Under the plans, academics and students who are ‘cancelled’ could sue the university for damages.

Yes, it’s disheartening such measures are needed at our seats of learning.

But it’s a good thing that they’ll help hold back the tide of intolerance that threatens to wash away free expression.
