Mail backs Race For Life fundraising

By Kate Pickles Health Editor

THe Daily Mail is today teaming up with Cancer Research UK to support this year’s Race for Life.

On World Cancer Day, we are encouraging readers to sign up to one of hundreds of races taking place across Britain.

Now in its 30th year, more than 10million people have taken part so far, raising a staggering £920million.

With cancer affecting one in two people and cases set to rise, our sponsorship and your support will help Cancer Research UK continue to raise money for cutting-edge research.

Michelle Mitchell, chief executive of Cancer Research UK, said: ‘Sadly, many people will be affected by cancer.

‘But thanks to partnerships like these, we can continue our vital work

to bring about a world where everybody can lead longer, better lives, free from the fear of cancer. We’re pleased to announce this new partnership with the Daily Mail, which offers huge opportunities to raise awareness of our life- saving work with millions of people, raise vital funds and increase the number of new supporters.’

Race for Life began in Battersea Park, south London, in 1994 when 680 women came together and raised £36,000. At the time, only a third of cancer sufferers lived for ten years or more. Today it is 50 per cent, largely thanks to leaps in research and treatment.

This year, there will be more than 450 events at over 180 UK locations, with women, men, and children able to run, walk or jog 3k, 5k or 10k from May to July. With this year’s Race for Life supported by Standard Life, runners can also take part in the Pretty Muddy obstacle course.

Marie De Marwicz, 70, took part in the first Race for Life and has since completed dozens of races as well as the London Marathon for Cancer Research UK. The fitness instructor from Hammersmith, west London, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004 and had surgery and radiotherapy as well as treatment to help stop it returning, developed from Cancer Research UK trials.

‘ I love running for Cancer Research UK because I feel that the research they did helped save my life,’ she said. ‘It might be that you’ve lost a friend or family member to cancer and this is such a great way of doing something for them.’

An estimated 500,000 people will be diagnosed with cancer each year in the UK by 2040, say researchers. It is why funding for more breakthroughs is essential, following successes including PARP inhibitors, which stop cancer cells repairing themselves.

Roland Agambar, Managing Director at Mail Newspapers, said: ‘The Daily Mail is incredibly proud to extend our partnership with CRUK by becoming the Official Media Partner of Race for Life.’
