Baggies soar into play-off spots

DAVID KENT

WEST BROM put their mini-blip behind them as they eased to a deserved victory over Coventry last night.

Though Grady diangana scored the game’s only goal in the first half, in truth the Baggies were in control as they secured a win that took them into the play-off spots, in fifth.

It was important that Carlos Corberan’s side bounced back after the first real disappointments of the Spaniard’s tenure — a loss at high-flyers Burnley despite leading for more than an hour, then an emphatic defeat at Bristol City in the FA Cup fourth round.

And they responded in style, with a sixth straight win and clean sheet at the Hawthorns prompting chants of ‘We’re on our way to the Premier League’ from the home faithful. diangana opened the scoring after 15 minutes, sweeping home after Jed Wallace flicked on darnell Furlong’s throw-in.

Wallace wasn’t far away from adding a second on the half-hour mark, but his shot flashed just wide of the post. daryl dike was sent through in the second half, but Coventry goalkeeper Ben Wilson spread himself to deny him. Viktor Gyokeres came closest to levelling for the Sky Blues late on after finding space in the box, but fired over the bar.
