ROOTLESS

by Krystle Zara Appiah (Borough Press £16.99, 368pp)

WHen efe was a teenager, she and her sister were sent from Ghana to live in London with their aunt and have an english education. In school she meets Sam, a boy with ambitions to be a lawyer. Their friendship develops into love and they marry.

But beneath the happy façade, cracks are beginning to form. Sam dreams of a perfect family life while efe is adamant she doesn’t want any children. Then an unplanned pregnancy forces them both into confronting their differences, complicated further by efe’s post-natal depression. Isolated and floundering, efe disappears one day, leaving her husband and their daughter, Olivia, behind.

appiah digs deep into her characters, writing evocatively about Ghana and its contrast with the UK to produce a powerful and bittersweet novel about motherhood, marriage and the challenges within that grips all the way to its shocking ending.
