PICK OF TODAY’S TV THE CLEANER, 9.30PM, BBC1

CRIME scene cleaner Paul ‘Wicky’ Wickstead (co-writer Greg Davies) is back to do the ickiest of jobs and meet the craziest of folk, mopping up the blood in the aftermath of murder. This opener for the new series of this black comedy is set in a pub — a no-frills boozer popular with the postmatch crowd — and stars Harriet Walter (pictured with Davies) as the brassy landlady necking bourbon at 10am and mourning the loss of her much younger lover, whose body parts Wicky collects while putting his foot in his mouth at regular intervals. They might seem hard-nosed, but landlady Lisa and muscle Cuddle (Charlie Rawes) are actually rather sweet in this instalment, an episode that is really all about love — stay tuned for Wicky’s vain, semi-naked attempt at wooing his girlfriend, which might actually be more gruesome than the crime scene itself. This show is all about the guest stars, and this series has an impressive line-up, including Zoe Wanamaker, Susannah Fielding, Simon Callow, Asim Chaudhry and Shakin’ Stevens. All six episodes are available as a boxset on iPlayer tonight, along with series one.
