Tuchel in at Bayern

GEORGE BOND

THOMAS TUCHEL is set to take over as Bayern Munich manager with the German champions on the brink of sacking Julian Nagelsmann last night. Tuchel, 49, had been linked with a return to Chelsea or a switch to Tottenham in recent weeks, if Graham Potter or Antonio Conte had been relieved of their duties, but is now expected to be tasked with reviving Bayern.

He is in line for a rapid return to England on April 11 when Bayern face Manchester City in a Champions League quarter-final first leg at the Etihad Stadium. Nagelsmann is on the way out after just 20 months at the Allianz Arena, with Bayern’s streak as Bundesliga champions under threat. They are a point behind leaders Borussia Dortmund — Tuchel’s old club — with nine matches left, and host their rivals in der Klassiker straight after the international break on April 1. Nagelsmann, 35, won Bayern’s 10th title in a row last season in his first year in charge, but was dumped out of the Champions League quarter-finals by Unai Emery’s Villarreal. This season, Bayern have struggled for form and had trailed upstarts Union Berlin for much of the campaign.

Former Leipzig and Hoffenheim boss Nagelsmann is one of the top targets for Tottenham to take over when Conte leaves the club this summer.
