PLAYER RATINGS

By ROB DRAPER at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium

ENGLAND (4-3-3) TEAM AVERAGE 6.8

JORDAN PICKFORD 7 Dependable as he always is for England, not to blame for the goal and distribution was also excellent in the first half.

KYLE WALKER 7.5

Strong throughout, he barely let Pellegrini have a kick until the 56th minute, when he played in Retegui for the goal.

JOHN STONES 7 Only stretched when Maguire’s mistake threw the back four. England’s most reliable defender in second-half storm.

HARRY MAGUIRE 5.5 His misplaced pass let Italy back in game. Worse, he got pulled out of position chasing his mistake.

LUKE SHAW 4 Had been solid all night and excellent in first half — but then lost his head with two yellow cards in just 54 seconds.

KALVIN PHILLIPS 6.5 A mainstay for Southgate and proved his worth in an excellent first half, though struggled like the rest after break.

JUDE BELLINGHAM 8.5 A superb performance from the No 10 at the Diego Armando

Maradona Stadium. Bossed the first half but found it harder when Marco Verratti found his range.

DECLAN RICE 7

Superb bringing the ball out of midfield but a soft yellow card meant his physical style became a risk.

BUKAYO SAKA 7 One of the most exciting attacking players in Europe but lacked an end product, although corners were a threat.

HARRY KANE 8 Record breaker and redemption man rolled into one. An historic night defined by a performance we have come to expect. JACK GREALISH 6.5 How did he not make it 3-0 on 45 minutes? Otherwise a typical impish performance, full of verve as England went forward.

SUBSTITUTES

Phil Foden 6 (for Grealish, 69min); Kieran Trippier (for Foden, 81); Reece James (for Saka, 85);

Conor Gallagher (for Bellingham, 85). Not used: Forster, Ramsdale, Dier, Chilwell, Guehi, Henderson, Maddison, Toney.

GARETH SOUTHGATE 7 Got it right in the first half but England again let control slip from their grasp and there will be big questions as to how they ended on the back foot.

ITALY TEAM AVERAGE

(4-3-3) 5.9

Donnarumma 7; Spinazzola 5, Acerbi 6 Toloi 5, Di Lorenzo 5; Verratti 7, Jorginho 5 (Tonali 69min, 6), Barella 5 (Cristante 62, 6); Pellegrini 7 (Gnoto 69, 6), Retegui 7, Beradi 6 (Politano 62, 6). Manager: Roberto Mancini 6.

SRDJAN JOVANOVIC (Serbia) 5 A lot of cards in a feisty affair and, though he missed the penalty initially, VAR set him right. Shaw’s first booking seemed soft.
