I’ll sue you, babe ... Cher’s lawsuit against Sonny’s widow for £700k

From Daniel Bates in New York

CHER is suing Sonny Bono’s widow for withholding royalties from the couple’s hit songs.

She claimed that Mary Bono had ‘undone’ a 50-50 revenue sharing agreement she and Sonny agreed when they split in 1975. She is seeking at least $1million (£729,000).

Cher, 7 , claims that the agreement covered songs including hits like ‘I Got You Babe’ and ‘The Beat Goes On’.

Sonny and Cher were married for six years. After their divorce, Cher continued her successful singing and film career while Mr Bono became a Republican congressman and mayor of Palm Springs in California. He died from a skiing accident in 1998 aged 62. Mary Bono, 59, was his fourth wife. After Mr Bono died his widow ran for election to his Congressional seat and served from 1998 to 2013. She’s now a political consultant. Neither Mrs Bono nor Cher responded to requests for comment last night.
