Could statins cut virus death risk?

TAKING statins could slash the risk of dying from Covid by 12 per cent in older people, a study suggests.

Researchers in Sweden tracked 963,876 people aged 45 or older, around one in six of whom had been given statins in the year before the pandemic. Those who had were 12 per cent less likely to die, even accounting for other risk factors.

Statins – taken by about 7.5million adults to lower cholesterol – are believed to boost the immune system and reduce the risk of blood clots, which can be a fatal complication of Covid.

The study, by the Karolinska Institute and published in PLOS Medicine journal, believes statins could provide low-cost, low-risk protection against the virus.
