AFTER A BARGAIN? A NEW CAR CAN BE CHEAPER

ONE-year-old used cars are selling for up to 19 per cent more than they cost new — with a budget Dacia topping the list of second-hand stars, a new price study reveals.

The increases are being driven by a shortage of new car stock and rising demand for second-hand vehicles. This has been accelerated by a global shortage of semiconductor chips needed in all new modern cars.

Data provided by vehicle valuation experts cap hpi to MailOnline’s financial arm This is Money reveals the 12month-old models in highest demand.

Drivers are willing to pay almost 20 per cent above ‘list price’ for a car with 10,000 miles already on the clock. Topping the charts is the previous generation Dacia Sandero which was replaced with a new version earlier this year. The average price paid for one new is £9,773 while the average sale value of used examples with 10,000 miles on the clock is £11,673. That is a ‘used’ premium of 19.4 per cent, says cap hpi.

The all-new Sandero is also seeing a rise — with used values for a sixmonth-old version hitting £12,908, while a new example is £11,843.

This is also the case for year-old Dacia Duster SUVs, which are about £1,000 more expensive than new.

Other examples include a diesel Range Rover Evoque costing £41,188 new, retailing used at £44,266.

A Toyota Yaris GR costing £30,963 new is selling for £32,500 used.
