Fir Park no-show shocks United stopper Siegrist

BRIAN MARJORIBANKS

BENJAMIN SIEGRIST has accused Dundee United of failing to turn up at Fir Park after their disappointing 1-0 defeat at Motherwell.

A piece of magic from Tony Watt amid a Lanarkshire monsoon saw the Steelmen cut the gap on fourth-placed United to just one point.

Graham Alexander’s side should have won by more goals, with Kevin van Veen and Stephen O’Donnell missing chances. But Motherwell ended up walking a tightrope in the closing stages after Barry Maguire was sent off for a second yellow card eight minutes from time. However, United still could not capitalise on their numerical advantage and Swiss keeper Siegrist was left virtually speechless at the poor performance. He believes not one of the players used by Tam Courts on Tuesday night did themselves justice as United missed a big chance to move seven points clear of Motherwell. ‘For once, I don’t really know what to say,’ shrugged Siegrist.

‘We can’t even get to be disappointed. To get to be disappointed, you actually have to turn up. You are allowed to be disappointed when you are doing your best and it’s not going your way but we didn’t turn up against Motherwell.

‘We were second best all game and we have to regroup and get it right for the next game. ‘It’s not good enough. There were too many unforced errors. Is it as bad as we have played this season? That doesn’t matter. You can play well and lose and you can play badly and lose. At the end of the day we got no points, so it doesn’t really matter if we played well or if we were dreadful.’
