Help! I’ve gone turtley wrong
IT would normally be at home in tropical waters. However, this young loggerhead turtle was washed up on a beach on Iona, sparking a major rescue operation.
A Hebridean islander who discovered the reptile was instructed by British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) on how to safely pick it up and carry it by ferry to Mull for a night in the local aquarium.
Yesterday the turtle took another ferry ride to Oban to be transported to Loch Lomond Sea Life Centre for rehabilitation.
Smaller, weaker tropical turtles can be pushed off course into the Gulf Stream and end up on the shores of the UK. The cold water causes severe hypothermia.
The BDMLR said survivors are released in places such as the Canary Islands.
