Traditionalists putting community first

THE religious group broadly referred to as Mennonites includes the Mennonite Brethren and the Old Order Amish.

Most Mennonites remain tightly bound to their communities and wear a distinctive plain style of clothing.

Many speak a German dialect but learn English in school.

Members avoid the use of technology to varying degrees as a way to emphasise community. Some shun it altogether.

In the more traditional societies, such as Old Order Mennonite, women are expected to be homemakers. They wear skirts and do not cut their hair, which they keep covered.

Children are considered a valuable part of the family and are expected to help with chores from a young age. Teaching them about faith is seen as the responsibility of the family.

These groups generally do not use birth control and families tend to be large – five or six children is not uncommon.
