The royal ketchup (for a princely sum)

HER Sandringham estate sells a variety of suitably grand gifts such as hampers, gin and afternoon tea sets. But now the Queen has turned to a much more humble product – tomato ketchup. The sauce, however, does come with a reassuringly exclusive price of £6.99 for a 295g bottle. The ketchup, which is on sale at the royal estate in Norfolk, cost up to 18 times more than regular sauces. Sainsbury’s own brand, for example is just 60p for 460g. The monarch’s sauce – marketed as ‘ideal for breakfast or any time of the day’ – is flavoured with dates, apple juice and spices. It states: ‘A real family favourite, packed full of tomato and lightly spiced, this ketchup is delightful.’ A brown sauce, also £6.99, is described as ‘a tomato-based sauce packed with vinegar and spices’.
