Highlands fossil is ‘missing link’
A FOSSIL which has baffled scientists since the Victorian era has been identified as a ‘missing link’ in the evolution of animals.
The 390-million-year-old relic was discovered near Thurso, Caithness, in 1890.
Named Palaeospondylus gunni, it is just two inches long, with a flat head and eel-like body. It is now thought to be a primitive precursor to a four-limbed animal. Professor Tatsuya Hirasawa, of Tokyo University in Japan, told the journal Nature: ‘This might have facilitated the development of new features like limbs.’
