Kate’s brolly good show!

Duchess can Doolittle as the rain stays mainly on 8,000 guests at Palace party

‘Sorry about the weather’

THEY will reign over us as king and queen in the future.

But yesterday Prince William and wife Kate were hoping for another type of rain to end as showers drenched guests at a Buckingham Palace garden party.

Kate, 40, looked elegant in a pale green flowing frock made by her private dress maker with a matching hat and umbrella – which she sheltered under.

She drew comparisons with the look of Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle in the Ascot scene in 1964 hit movie My Fair Lady – which coincidentally featured the song The Rain In Spain.

Meanwhile William, 39, in a top hat and morning suit, repeatedly apologised for the downpours as the heavens opened. ‘Sorry about the weather,’ he sighed to guests at the 8,000-strong gathering.

The royal couple were standing in for the Queen as they hosted the party.

Kate was delighted to be reunited with Holocaust survivor Manfred Goldberg, 92, after they met twice previously.

Mr Goldberg, who was with his wife of 61 years, Shary, is a German-born Jew who was sent to a concentration camp in Poland when he was 14. His younger brother, Herman, was murdered there.

Catching sight of the couple, Kate broke into a broad smile and clasped his hand.

‘Manfred!’ she beamed. ‘It’s so lovely to see you again.’ She referred to a recent project he took part in organised by Prince Charles where he and other Holocaust survivors had their portraits painted. Afterwards Mr Goldberg, of north London, who came to England after the war, said: ‘It is such an honour to be here.’ It was the last of three garden parties this year to thank unsung heroes of UK communities along with members of the diplomatic service, military and church.

The Earl and Countess of Wessex, Princess Beatrice and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester were also in the royal party.
